![]() ![]() Though they may help bring iTunes into the streaming era, Beats does nothing but cozy Apple up to the very music industry that impedes progress. ![]() Likely, this comes from the fact that Beats comes from music industry insiders, and like all music industry insiders they need to dumb things down into buzzwords. The genres aren’t anything more than a radio programmer’s idea of genres, and the moods seem like they were written by someone who spent ten minutes on Twitter and now they understand “the youths.” Who’s in the mood to make bad choices or pre-partying while at work with their boo? Seriously this is the sort of pandering youth culture bullshit that made me stop listening to the radio in the first place. Problem is, and I’m likely putting on my old guy hat here, the sentence is idiotic. You can re-edit the station to tweak it if you don’t like the creation. ![]() You then get a radio station customized to your mood. This allows you to create a radio station based on location, activity, mood, company and genre. ![]() (For instance I wasn’t able to find Led Zeppelin on Beats, but all their albums are on Spotify.) The interface for searching and listening to music is easy enough, but the central premise of the service is The Sentence. The catalog isn’t the problem, the music industry ensures that all steaming services seem to have the same catalog with some spotty and rolling differences. Since Beats’ streaming service was supposedly the reason Apple was shelling out so much cash for the company, I’m using the new iPad app. What sucks is that their effort is so mediocre. Dre and Trent Reznor on board might be the only way to make music nerds pay attention to yet another streaming service. For a free app, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t give it a spin.Making the case for a new streaming service is tough, but having Dr. A bit like how Whatsapp has bridged the same gap for messaging. The fact that it will work with Android and iPhone means that you can quickly share files with colleagues that may be using both types of smartphones. There are absolutely no file type limits, which means you can send anything from MP3s to Powerpoint presentations. All devices must have Instashare installed in order to show up on other devices. This will prompt a notification on the receiving device to accept the transfer. To send a file, just press and hold then drag over to the right side. The screen is split into two sections, with a file browser on the left and a list of connected devices on the right. When sending a file, there are no passwords to enter and you don’t have to create any accounts. It works by connecting to either Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and the transfer speed of files is about average (20 secs for a 2MB file in our test). With Instashare, we didn’t have any connection issues and it quite happily found the numerous devices that we used. If you’ve ever tried to use AirDrop, it can sometimes be a real pain to get it working. However we also think it works better than AirDrop when sending files between iOS devices. It’s a really easy way to transfer files between all manners of devices, regardless of their operating system. Instashare is a beautiful app that works exactly like Apple’s AirDrop, but you can send files between iOS, Android, Mac and PC computers. ![]()
